Rulebooks are carried out on matte coated paper with a weight of 130 g. Most board game rulebooks are printed on such paper.
Form of Rulebooks Execution
You can order rulebooks in the form of a folded booklet, stapled in the middle, a booklet bound with a wire spine, or as loose, single sheets. The latter form is dedicated to short rulebooks fitting on 1 or 2 pages or reference cards printed on thicker, cardstock paper.
Rulebooks are printed in color on a professional printing machine.
Booklet-style rulebooks are additionally creased, so the spine of the rulebooks is folded in an aesthetic manner, stapled in the middle, at the paper fold. Then, the entire rulebook is trimmed to the chosen format.
Preparing the File for Printing Rulebooks
The total number of pages in the rulebook file forms the rulebook after printing. The front cover is the first page from the file. If the ordered rulebook has 4 pages or fewer, the rulebook will be printed on a large sheet and folded in half without stapling. If the ordered rulebook does not have a number of pages corresponding to a multiple of 4, the last page or pages will be unprinted (remain white).
The maximum size of the rulebook that we can print is 220 x 310 mm when folded along the long side. This necessitates scaling some larger rulebooks. Square rulebooks commonly used, sized 280 x 280 mm, are scaled to a format of 220 x 220 mm. Similarly, A4 rulebooks folded along the short side – these will also be scaled to a format fitting within the dimensions of 220 x 310 mm.
The rulebook file can be scaled to the chosen format while maintaining the aspect ratio of the sides.
The rulebook file must be a PDF file, each page in the file is the next page of the rulebook. We do not print rulebooks from files that have two rulebook pages side by side.
If you are preparing the rulebook from scratch, remember to leave printer’s marks. Rulebook files provided by publishers often do not have printer’s marks, so it is necessary to slightly enlarge them. Therefore, it may happen that elements near the edges of the rulebook will be trimmed.
